American cleric urges killing of US citizens

Anwar al-Awlaki has released a video in which he calls for Muslims around the world to dedicate themselves to the deaths of US citizens.

The US-born Islamic cleric, who has links to al-Qaeda in Yemen, sent out his message to Islamic websites to encourage the killing of Americans.

The hate-filled rant, disguised as a sermon, suggests Islamic clerics do not need to issue any special religious rulings allowing Americans to be killed.

He says: "Don’t consult with anybody in killing the Americans. All Americans are the enemy."

In the message, delivered in Arabic, al-Awlaki
dressed in traditional Yemeni robes and a dagger, likens Americans to "a party of devils."

Al-Awlaki has posted messages on Islamic websites in the past to implore Muslims to murder American soldiers.

He usually justifies the killings of American civilians by accusing the US of intentionally killing Muslim civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Al-Awlaki was born in New Mexico to Yemeni parents.

He has been tied to the September 11th hijackers and to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who tried to blow up an airliner over Detroit in December last year.

He was also in contact with Nidal Malik Hasan, the Army psychiatrist accused of killing 13 people in November at the Fort Hood in Texas.

It has also been suggested he may have had an interest in the bombs that were last week sent through the mail in packages addressed to the US.

The bombs were found at airports in England and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
